Counter-mapping Naujininkai

@Luna6

Presentation, Luna6 Zanavyku 6 (16-1645)
walk and robinija pancake gathering, Location TBA (17-1830)

Another common green territory is purchased for “development” in our district. Early signs of its appropriation have already appeared; pointing to its future enclosure as a privately distributed and accessed property. Wooden stakes mark the site, while a partially demolished hill hints at a foundation. Adjacent wooden houses are bought out one by one, their former residents erased from memory along with the material remnants of their existence.

Responding to the violence of this territorial claim and others like it, the Naujininkai Commons began a year ago – at the movement space Luna6 – as an effort to cultivate strategies for common inhabitation and reproduction of the territories in which we live.

As part of the Naujininkai Commons summer "counter-mapping initiative," we invite you for a two part gathering. We begin at Luna6 with a presentation by Vaiva Aglinskas on green gentrification and its resistance through practices of urban gardening and foraging. Aglinksas argues that such practices, when construed through city poetry and prose, constitute a latent urban commons that might mobilize alternative understandings of urban vitality.

Following the talk, we walk down the street to assemble in the contested development territory, cooking some pancakes with locally foraged robinija flower,organized together with Tadas Šarūnas. Through the gathering we aim to raise awareness of the botanical city or common territory that is currently being taken by new developments. Speculating, communally, about alternative territorial claims and the sources of desire that could inform them.
